Project Description
As part of the programme to celebrate AVEIRO PORTUGUESE CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2024, we continue to be entrusted by the local mayor with the graphic and editorial design of the “Freedom, Love and Poetry” exhibition in the temporary exhibition space of the Municipal Museum. This exhibition was organised in collaboration with Cupertino de Miranda Foundation and curated by Marlene Oliveira, the Foundation’s Artistic Director.
We worked together to create the poster, all the advertising and communication media on the social networks, the floor plan, the decoration of the space with prints and phrases, as well as the layout, graphic design, photo editing and printing of the exhibition catalogue.
This exhibition embraces Freedom, Love and Poetry as its main mottos, establishing a bridge between the Surrealist movement and the 25 April Revolution, both significant for their search for and expression of freedom.
Surrealism, a century old, manifested itself as a means of expressing creative freedom, exploring the poetry of dreams and the absurd. At the same time, the 25th of April 1974, a historical milestone in Portugal, stood out for its emphasis on the values of freedom, respect and equality, and for the realisation of the aspiration for a country where the voice of the people would prevail. During the dictatorship in Portugal, many artists faced significant challenges, such as political repression and censorship, which severely limited freedom of expression. This period led to forced exile, creative restrictions and a constant struggle for artistic expression. However, 25 April 1974 marked a turning point, giving these artists and the nation the freedom they had longed for.
The exhibition celebrates not only the resistance and resilience of these artists, but also freedom of expression, emphasising the inseparability of political and artistic revolution in the search for a more authentic and free world.
