Part 2.1 Perspective Shifts
It’s as if the mind were a dense forest, full of unexplored paths and hidden surprises. And so, by venturing into this mental labyrinth, it is possible to find innovative solutions and create things that were previously unthinkable.
Inversion
Reversing the perspective can open up new perspectives. What is the opposite of the solution to the problem or issue? What would be the worst idea? Who isn’t the target audience?
Recontextualise
How would you solve the problem in the future or in the past? How about a different cultural context? Try 5 ideas in 5 minutes to generate different perspectives and then choose two.
No Limits
Removing limitations means removing assumptions, which can result in new perspectives and solutions. Imagine that you have unlimited powers, budget, time or technological capacity to solve the problem. What would a god do?
Extremification
Looking at the extremes can bring sharper insights. What would happen if you amplified the problem or the solution? And if it were tiny or overwhelming, what would a global response look like?
Challenge
Creative breakthroughs often come from challenging conventions. What assumptions have already been made? Could they be wrong or out of place? What if the briefing is too short or too comprehensive? Pretend you’re your competitor.
In the Other’s Place
Brainstorm different perspectives and types of models that may be relevant to your particular situation. For example, if you have a marketing problem, you could suggest different types of customers and business stakeholders.
Imagine you’re an Artist
How can different types of artists interpret this problem? Brainstorming from the perspective of a visual artist, playwright, fashion designer, advertising creative, product designer, UX designer or poet.
